Design Philosophy Sag Harbor

Contour

Contour plays an important role in both interiors and fashion.  For interiors, I use contour by considering the outline or shape of the furniture, and I use it to play off key features of the space itself, creating a sense of balance or strategic imbalance.

Using the curves of a sofa, the sharp corners of tables, or the soft angles of a sculpture, contour adds depth and dimension.

In fashion, contour gives shape and dimension to areas of the body, even the accessories can shift the contour of a look.  The artful use of contour can create an inviting feeling, subtly catching and keeping the eye of the viewer.

Sculptural

A medium of expression in three dimensions. Sculpture can be interpreted literally or figuratively in interior design.

Sculpture of course, usually appears in a space as art. But I see the swing in our Sag Harbor project as usable sculpture. A captivating, three-dimensional focal point of the room.

I have loved sculpture work for as long as I can remember. The first fashion collection I worked on in the 90's was based on the work of Constantin Brancusi. Forms were elongated, in an elegant cream palette and accessories mimicked his infamous "Bird in Space" sculpture.

Sculpture in all forms will always be a tool for me.

Drape

The way materials fall within their own weight.

Draping is a pivotal part of fashion design, as it dictates overall appearance and movement of a silhouette. The manipulation of fabric so that it cascades and molds around the body is a true art form. Designers such as Donna Karan and Rick Owens are masters of draping.

Having spent several years as a fashion designer, drape and form are inherent in my aesthetic.  Fluid aesthetics create an ambiance that is always intriguing to me while still being functional inn a space.

For this beach house I wanted to use rope as a material base, and with the double height staircase, I wanted it visible from the indoors and outdoors on both levels, so the draping of the rope was an involved process to hit all the right points.
